MCCAC and WAGAP announce winter shelters and outreach resources

The Dalles, Oregon ( November 17, 2023) – In advance of severe weather hitting the region, Mid-Columbia Community Action Council, Washington Gorge Action Programs, and area partners are preparing to ensure our most vulnerable community members can access shelters, emergency lodging, and street outreach resources.

Shelter for Hood River County Residents

Mid-Columbia Community Action Council will operate the 24-bed, non-congregate shelter at 1733 Oak St. in Hood River beginning on Monday, November 20th, 2023. The site is open throughout the winter season, until March 2024. The shelter will be staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Shelter guest intakes will take place from 1-5pm on Monday, November 20th and from 9am-5pm every weekday after that through mid-March 2024. Shelter for Wasco and Sherman County Residents

Mid-Columbia Community Action Council’s non-congregate shelter site in The Dalles is open year-round and is now located at The Annex at 200 W. 2nd Street. . Shelter guest intakes take place from 9am-5pm every weekday. For more information about available shelter beds or other emergency lodging resources available to Wasco and Sherman County residents during severe winter weather events, fill out a shelter intake form here or call (541) 980- 0855.

Street Outreach Resources in Wasco, Hood River, and Sherman Counties

In addition to shelter and emergency lodging services, MCCAC and its partners provide street outreach supplies to Hood River, Wasco, and Sherman County residents as we work to ensure unsheltered community members can stay warm through these tough winter months. To pick up available street outreach supplies visit one of MCCAC’s offices in The Dalles or Hood River between 8am-12pm and 1pm-5pm Monday-Thursday.

Warming Shelter for Skamania County

Washington Gorge Action Programs (WAGAP) is seeking to hire a Seasonal Shelter Outreach Coordinator in order to open the Skamania County Emergency Warming Shelter in Stevenson. The facility will be unable to open until fully staffed. Inquiries for the position should be directed to Patty Gallardo at patty@wagap.org. Once staffed, the location, operating hours, contact and access information will be announced. Seasonal Shelters for Klickitat County

Persons seeking shelter in Klickitat County can call WAGAP at 509-493-2662 for information.

Transportation Options

For those who need transportation to access a shelter, information about public transit schedules, routes, and dial-a-ride options in the Mid-Columbia region can be found here. Hood River and Wasco County residents who are enrolled in PacificSource insurance through the Oregon Health Plan in are eligible for a free ride to a shelter using Non-Emergent Medical Transportation and can call (855) 397-3617 for more information about this service. Sherman County residents enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan can call (877) 875-4657 to schedule a free ride to a shelter. Medicaid recipients in Skamania and Klickitat Counties who need to schedule a ride to a shelter can call the Medicaid Transportation Broker at (800) 752-9422.
