MCCAC and WAGAP announce winter shelters and outreach resources

The Dalles, Oregon (November 7, 2022, updated December 28, 2022, updated February 22, 2023) – With severe weather hitting the region, Mid-Columbia Community Action Council and its partners are ensuring our most vulnerable community members can access shelters, emergency lodging, and street outreach resources.

Shelter for Hood River County Residents

Mid-Columbia Community Action Council will operate Hood River Shelter Services’ 24-bed, non-congregate shelter at 1733 Oak St. in Hood River beginning on Tuesday, November 8th, 2022. The site is open throughout the winter season, until March 2023. The shelter will be staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Shelter guest intakes will take place from 1-5pm on Tuesday, November 8th and from 9am-5pm every weekday after that through mid-March 2023. Shelter for Wasco and Sherman County Residents

Mid-Columbia Community Action Council’s non-congregate shelter site in The Dalles is open year-round and has 34 beds. It is located at the corner of Bargeway and Terminal Avenue. Shelter guest intakes take place from 9am-5pm every weekday. For more information about available shelter beds or other emergency lodging resources available to Wasco and Sherman County residents during severe winter weather events, fill out a shelter intake form here or call (541) 980-0855.

Street Outreach Resources in Wasco, Hood River, and Sherman Counties In addition to shelter and emergency lodging services, MCCAC and its partners provide street outreach services and supplies to Hood River, Wasco, and Sherman County residents as we work to ensure unsheltered community members can stay warm through these tough winter months. Street outreach staff also help provide direct referrals to sheltering and other relevant resources during severe winter weather events. Warming Shelter for Skamania County

Washington Gorge Action Programs (WAGAP) operates a warming shelter for overnight relief from dangerous winter weather conditions. The Warming Shelter is located in Stevenson near the Hegewald Center and is now open Thursday - Monday nights with arrival between 6pm and 8pm for check-in. For more information and other warming resources, please call the Stevenson office at 509-427-8229 Monday- Thursday 9am-5pm. Afterhours support is available by calling 509-281-1129. The shelter is projected to operate through this season’s winter months until mid-March 2023. Seasonal Shelters for Klickitat County

Persons seeking shelter and other warming resources in Klickitat County can call WAGAP offices for support. In Goldendale and eastern Klickitat County call 509-773-6834 Monday – Thursday 9am-5pm and Friday 9am-1pm. In Bingen/White Salmon and western Klickitat County call 509-493-2662 Monday - Thursday 9am-5pm. More information about this and other seasonal shelters in the Mid-Columbia River region can be found on WAGAP’s website: www.wagap.org.

Transportation Options For those who need transportation to access a shelter, information about public transit schedules, routes, and dial-a-ride options in the Mid-Columbia region can be found here. Hood River and Wasco County residents who are enrolled in PacificSource insurance through the Oregon Health Plan in are eligible for a free ride to a shelter using Non-Emergent Medical Transportation and can call (855) 397-3617 for more information about this service. Sherman County residents enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan can call (877) 875-4657 to schedule a free ride to a shelter. Medicaid recipients in Skamania and Klickitat Counties who need to schedule a ride to a shelter can call the Medicaid Transportation Broker at (800) 752-9422.

MCCAC’s website and WAGAP’s website will be regularly updated with information about winter shelter and emergency lodging resources that will be available during severe winter weather advisories and warnings in the region.
